I will start my story about Oaga with the fact that its island, Maaranfushi, was literally claimed from the ocean, meaning it was artificially created. This is also the main reason why it is surrounded by a stone wall in the sea, which not only protects the sand from erosion but also creates a pleasant warm-water lagoon for swimming in front of the villas.

The person who leads the art class, Nafa, sings brilliantly like Ed Sheeran and plays the guitar. The black-haired, long-haired beauty Amney, who leads the dances, turns out to be a perfect artist. She tells traditional Maldivian tales in an engaging way, sings, plays music, and skillfully spins fire. The girl who paints the directional signs, Naura, wears a traditional hijab, welcomes you with huge curious eyes, works in robotics and visual arts, and is a very interesting person to talk to. She speaks fascinatingly about her work as a mentor of the Maldives robotics team. All these people speak perfect English, and each of them can tell you extremely interesting stories. Ibra’s lecture about the ocean was one of the most interesting things I had heard recently, both in terms of information and the way it was delivered, with patience, a smile, emotion, and competence.

… The focus on sustainable use of the island is immediately noticeable. The drinking water supplied to your room every day comes in glass bottles instead of plastic ones. The resort also relies on reuse and creative upcycling in its decor and spaces, such as barrels that, instead of being thrown away, have been turned into colorful works of art. They serve as bar tables, cabinets for the fridges in the rooms, or stands. Natural materials and works by local artisans are used instead of imports from abroad. Waste separation has not been forgotten either. You can also see the efforts being made to develop the coral reef around the island. The vegetation is grown organically, without the use of fertilizers.

… Try the treatments at Oaga’s Hoba Spa, and buy some of their cosmetics too, because they are made by a local boutique artisan using organic ingredients.

Upon arrival, you fill out a questionnaire in which they ask whether you have any occasion to celebrate while you are on the island.

… Oaga is more suitable for people who want character, not just seclusion and luxury. There is enough seclusion too, for anyone who is looking for it. The common spaces are not overcrowded. Quite the opposite, everything is planned so well that it feels as if you are a VIP guest and they are serving only you. You even have a personal assistant, called by the local term mahlemee, whom you contact for everything. There is no reception, and you do not have to struggle to solve any problems yourself. He or she provides whatever you need, books restaurants for you, reserves activities, and so on.

… The rooms are cleaned twice a day, so you do not feel any discomfort from sand brought inside or from beach towels that have not dried.

… The prices outside the all-inclusive packages are normal, almost equal to those in Bulgaria. The service is of a very high standard, but the package includes a rich enough selection of food and drink options, so there is no need to order outside it.

… The resort offers all kinds of additional activities: art classes, snorkeling and diving excursions, beer and gin tastings, cooking and cocktail-mixing classes, yoga nidra, sports activities, and there is also a gym. You simply ask your mahlemee, and he or she informs you, reserves places, and organizes everything.

Smell and taste a more creative gastronomy at Oaga

When you check into the room, in addition to the ice bucket with sparkling wine, your hosts have left you a box of local treats. These are small bites that demonstrate the most characteristic aromas and flavors of the Maldives, including a typical local pie, smoked tuna, coconut, cinnamon, small nuts, and more.

Our mahlemee, Shifu, answered every single one of the questions I bombarded her with every day on WhatsApp, and thanks to her, we lacked nothing. The week we spent there was the most beautiful escape from our routine everyday life, a holiday that will remain in our memories for a long time and one we will talk about many times.
