10 Maldives Vacation Tips You Won’t Find in Every Travel Guide
In short: if you are planning a vacation in the Maldives, the most important thing is to choose the right season, check if the island is a resort island or a local island, research the house reef, the transfer, the alcohol policy, the snorkeling conditions and what you should actually bring in your luggage. From personal experience, I would say that the Maldives is not just a “luxury beach vacation”, but a place where good preparation makes a huge difference.
The tips in this article are based on personal experience, with my most recent impressions coming from our stay at Oaga Art Resort in April 2026.
Quick guide before a Maldives vacation
- Best time to visit: the dry season is the safest choice, but April and December can often be a good balance between weather and price.
- First trip: a resort island is the easier and more comfortable option, while a local island feels more authentic but requires more planning.
- Packing: 2-3 swimsuits, SPF 50, a UV shirt, a hat, sunglasses, light clothes and insect repellent are usually enough.
- Alcohol: alcohol is mainly available on licensed resort islands, but it is not freely available on local islands.
- Snorkeling: check the house reef before booking, because not every island offers the same conditions.
- Safety: do not touch corals, do not feed the fish, do not swim alone and be careful around Titan Triggerfish.
- Local food: start with Mas huni with roshi, then try hedhikaa, rihaakuru and valhomas.
1. What is the most important thing to know about the country of Maldives?
General information
The Maldives is a small island country in the Indian Ocean, made up of 26 atolls and around 1,190 coral islands, scattered like tiny pearls across a vast blue expanse. The population is around 528 thousand people, which makes the country small in scale, but extremely recognizable worldwide. Its economy relies mainly on tourism and fishing – two sectors that form nearly half of the GDP and employment. Behind the scenes of the luxury resorts, however, stands a country for which transport, water, energy, and climate are everyday problems to solve. It is exactly this mix of heavenly beauty and real vulnerability that makes the Maldives so impressive.
The local official language, Dhivehi, and its script are influenced by those in Sri Lanka, are read from right to left, and include Arabic symbols.

In order to increase tourist flow and state revenue, the Maldives constantly expands existing islands and creates new territories. There are already dozens of such projects in the country, and different sources indicate approximately around 50 islands with reclaimed land or at least 52 reclamation projects in recent years. In the Maldives, this is not just construction, but literally creating new land where until recently there was only water.
Such a project is Oaga Art Resort, which we visited. The result of this reclamation is impressive. There is no way to tell that this is an artificially created island.
You are planning your perfect holiday in the Maldives – in the most heavenly corner of the planet. You have set aside a serious part of your budget, because getting there is expensive, and the stay is not cheap either. Naturally, you want everything to be perfect and magical, just like in the photos you have seen.
Here I tried to summarize what mistakes not to make and what to do in the best possible way, so that your soul feels as full as possible during your stay in the Maldives.
2. When is the best time to go to the Maldives?
It is not mandatory to go exactly during the dry season in the Maldives
The dry season is from January to March. But the shoulder months, April and December, also offer good weather, and prices drop quite a lot then.

3. Which airline to choose?
Do not set off for the Maldives without thorough research on airlines and ticket prices
In previous years I have flown with Turkish Airlines because the flight is very convenient. To the East, I have flown with Qatar Airways and Gulf Air. This time, however, when I was researching, their prices turned out to be much higher, not to say double the offer from Lufthansa. Their long-haul flights are operated by their subsidiary company, specialized in holiday travel to distant destinations. It is not as luxurious as the previously mentioned ones, and the flight is quite long, but it saves you part of the budget.
If you travel with light luggage, you can also try more unconventional options such as low cost long haul companies like Air Arabia, but there you have to plan the layover time yourself, carry your luggage with you through the airports, and get by yourself to an airport from which you can take the flight.
If you insist on traveling with one ticket, an option where you will not miss a flight so easily, flydubai is a good choice.
Most important: Even if you are a loyal customer of a particular airline, flying with another carrier may turn out to be more cost-effective – so simply check all available options. The best choice of transportation depends on your priorities: cabin comfort, the option to carry more or specialized luggage, a lower price, or a shorter flight.
4. Should we choose a resort or a local island in the Maldives?
Research well the resort options and the specifics of the islands
Researching the conditions on the island is useful so that your expectations can be met as much as possible.
In the Maldives, there are more and more resorts that are entirely managed by Maldivian companies, with luxurious conditions, but also better prices. Such was our resort, Oaga Art Resort – an exceptional and different place where you lack nothing and from which you do not want to leave. The resort has been welcoming tourists since the end of 2023 and has bold and exciting development plans starting as early as May 2026.
For more information, read the post Oaga Art Resort – a different kind of holiday in the Maldives.
Tourist services in the Maldives are now also offered by guesthouses and smaller local hotels, which are much cheaper. If you choose this direction, research the available offers thoroughly, because they do not offer the comfort of the resorts, but the experience is more authentic.
What to check before booking a Maldives trip
- Whether the island is a resort island or a local island.
- How to get there – by speedboat, seaplane or a domestic flight.
- How much the transfer costs and whether it is included in the price.
- Whether there is a good house reef for snorkeling.
- Whether alcohol is available, if this is important to you.
- What the all-inclusive package includes.
- Whether a mask, snorkel, fins and a life jacket are provided.
- Whether there is medical assistance or a doctor on the island.
- What the drone rules are, if you plan to film or take aerial photos.
- What real reviews say about the food, service and beach.
5. What is the electricity standard in the Maldives?
In the Maldives, the standard electrical voltage is 230 V and the frequency is 50 Hz.
Usually, resorts provide sockets of all standards, but for local islands, it is good to check how things stand with them. At Oaga, the sockets include all standards, and we did not have to use adapters.

6. Is there alcohol in the Maldives?
Research the alcohol policy of the island you plan to visit in the Maldives.
The official religion of the Maldives is Sunni Islam, which strictly prohibits alcohol.
For the tourism sector, there is a special licensing regime – alcohol is available on resort islands as was Oaga Art Resort and on some tourist vessels under a special license or permit.
Since some tourists complain that alcohol was not served on the island where they stayed, check whether the island where you plan to stay is private and has its own rules. If you are in a local island hotel or guesthouse, yes, alcohol may be missing.
Do not even think about trying to bring alcohol in, even if it was bought from an airport duty free- it is forbidden, and it will be confiscated. You cannot even take a bottle from your island and bring it to a local one. The government has announced a firm policy that local islands are to be free from alcoholic beverages.

Most importantly: if you want cocktails, wine or beer during your vacation, choose a resort island and check in advance what the package includes. Alcohol is not freely available on local islands.
7. What should we take or not take in our luggage?
Maldives Brief Packing List
-
2-3 swimsuits
-
SPF 50 for face and body
-
UV shirt for snorkeling
-
hat or headscarf
-
sunglasses
-
light clothing
-
water shoes
-
little insect repellent
-
minimal makeup
-
no heels or unnecessary formal clothes
Do not bring high-heeled shoes
You will not need them. Everywhere is covered with beautiful fine white sand. As a last resort, flip-flops or flat sandals.
You must take shoes for rocky beaches to avoid unpleasant contact with sharp corals, rocks, and sea cucumbers.
Most of all, I recommend walking barefoot all the time. Walking barefoot on the ground, sand, or water, known as “grounding,” allows direct contact with the Earth’s surface, during which free electrons can pass into the body and neutralize accumulated free radicals. It is believed that this reduces stress, improves sleep, and makes you feel balanced and relaxed.
Even for the restaurant you do not need shoes.
The sand in the Maldives is soft and pleasant, it is a pleasure to walk barefoot!
It is good to have 2 to 3 swimsuits
In the Maldives, humidity is very high, between 73% and 83%, and everything dries slowly. If you do not like your swimsuits being constantly wet and you want to have a spare dry pair, it needs time to dry, so you need a third swimsuit.
On the other hand, if you are a cigar smoker, perhaps in this place they will be in their best condition without additional humidification. Even so, to prevent them from becoming over-humidified, resorts keep them in a humidor.
Do not forget to take SPF 50 sunscreen
In the Maldives, the sun shines almost vertically because of the islands’ proximity to the equator. It is quite strong, and the white sand additionally reflects the rays. Anything below SPF 50 will not protect you at all, and do not forget to reapply every 2 hours.
A UV-protection diving shirt is a good solution against sunburn while diving
Invest up to around 20 euros in something like this, and you will thank me for the advice if you plan to snorkel. The underwater world is so interesting that you do not feel how 2-3 hours pass in the water, your eyes fixed on the blue depths, while your back is generously exposed to the strong sun rays. Even if you have applied SPF 50, you are guaranteed to burn on your back to a purple-red color if you are not wearing such a shirt.
You do not need long trousers at all
This applies to both men and women. Make sure you have elegant shorts, sports shorts, a short skirt, a comfortable dress, short-sleeved tops, tank tops, and underwear. Socks are an unnecessary accessory- you only need them for the departure and arrival back home. A hat or headscarf is mandatory, as are sunglasses. The sun is blinding, and the white sand adds even more brightness.
There is no need for a beach bag and beach towels
Free up space in your luggage from these items. Resorts provide beach towels and beach bags. But if you are not staying at a resort, but on a local island, it is better to check whether your hosts have taken care of this detail.

Do not forget to take a small package of repellent, just in case
In general, there are no mosquitoes, and the islands are usually fogged against insects. Even so, because of the high humidity, around 5 p.m. small mosquitoes come out. Their bites are not severe and the itching passes quickly, but still, you can insure yourself.
Do not get upset if you have forgotten your makeup
The sun and seawater will make sure your face glows and has a healthy tan, as long as you do not forget to apply SPF 50. In the evening, the restaurants and bar are lit so that you can see the food, while people remain in slightly dimmed light. Relax, do not think about makeup, enjoy a holiday without tension and worries.

8. How can we vacation more sustainably and with care for nature in the Maldives?
Save the fresh water on the island
This does not mean not drinking water and not staying hydrated – quite the opposite. On the islands, the supply of fresh water is a rather complex process of processing and desalinating seawater. As a result, waste is produced, called brine, meaning a solution with a high salt content, which is returned to the ocean. In this way, salinity around islands with such processing facilities increases significantly, which is a problem for marine flora and fauna.
Turn off the lights when you do not need them
One of the biggest challenges in the Maldives is the supply of electricity, because there are no sources from which it can be obtained easily. The government is working more and more on the use of renewable energy sources. On the islands, the main source of energy is generators. More and more solar panels are being installed on rooftops, but still, energy is very expensive and still difficult to produce.
Do not blast your own music from a speaker
Tourists come to the Maldives to be alone and to have peace and quiet. It is better to enjoy the rustling of the palm tree under whose shade you are resting with a view of the turquoise ocean.
Dispose of your waste separately, do not pollute the sea water
There is such an opportunity, or at least it was at Oaga Art Resort.
Protect the corals in the water
I strongly advise you not to touch or step on the corals. One reason is that you can injure yourself badly, and the other is that they need to be protected, because the marine flora and fauna depend on them. If there are no corals, there are no fish either.
Special efforts are made on the islands to maintain the corals, because in modern atmospheric conditions they can very easily be destroyed. If you see a purely white, snow-white coral, it means it has died; they call this bleached. It takes decades for a new one to grow in its place. Fortunately, a technology has been invented through the placement of special structures in the water and the use of a very weak electric current, similar to the one that flows in the human body, to speed up their growth process, so that instead of years, they can develop in months.
Also, the export of corals is forbidden, so be careful if you have started collecting them on the beach to take home.
Stroll on the beach at night, but with your phone’s flashlight on so you don’t step on the small nocturnal creatures
Make sure to turn on your phone’s flashlight if you’re walking on the beach in the dark. You’ll see super active nightlife – it’s full of crabs, big and small, jumping up and down.
9. Is diving in the Maldives safe?
You absolutely must snorkel or scuba dive
The marine world of the Maldives is beautiful and captivating. Once you see it, you want to enjoy it every day. If you plan to snorkel, and I wholeheartedly recommend it, research what the reef of your island is like, what they call the house reef. Some islands have a small house reef, others have a much more interesting and vibrant one. The good thing is that there is no need to bring a mask, snorkel, and fins – they are offered free of charge everywhere, but if you insist on bringing your own, consider how much luggage weight your airline allows. Even if you cannot swim, every room in the resorts has a life jacket that will keep you above water.
Scuba diving equipment is also offered, just check in advance what the conditions are at your resort.
Do not be afraid of the sharks, beware of the Titan Triggerfish
The sharks here are not that big, and they are not interested in you at all. Here they are your last concern – they are harmless. Still, do not chase them and do not try to feed them. In general, avoid interactions with the marine world so that you do not disturb it or accidentally get hurt. Just observe it.
The dangerous fish here are Titan Triggerfish. If it happens to be the season after they have laid eggs, their main task is to protect their offspring. If you linger around them, they do not think too much – they attack directly, and with their sharp teeth, they can tear your fins while you are trying to swim away from them. Ask at the hotel whether it is such a period and what to do in order to stay protected.
It is best not to reach out toward the fish. Even though the lionfish is very beautiful and looks harmless, it is venomous and you can get hurt.
Some of the fish, such as needlefish, are quite curious and may even swim with you. There is nothing to worry about, they will not do anything to you, they will simply look at you with their big curious eyes. They even look as if they are smiling.
Dive calmly, observe the marine creatures, but still do not interfere in their affairs.
If your hotel offers a night snorkeling excursion, they say it’s worth it because when the corals are illuminated at night, they are much more colorful and vital than during the day.
See a short video about the reef at Oaga Art Resort, 3:26 min:
It is good not to swim alone in the reef
It is good to be at least 2 people in the ocean. These are basic safety rules here. You are in wild nature, so to speak, and your companion is another pair of eyes and ears.
Most importantly: check the house reef, don’t swim alone, don’t touch corals, and don’t seek contact with marine life.
10. What local food should we try in the Maldives?
Feel free to try it, because the local cuisine is very delicious, but if you have allergies, ask the staff beforehand what the food contains.
The main ingredients of Maldivian cuisine are fish and coconut.
- For breakfast, the traditional food is Mas huni with roshi
This is the classic breakfast in the Maldives – a mixture of tuna, grated coconut, onion, chili, and lime, served with the traditional flatbread roshi, which is very similar to a pancake. This is perhaps the most iconic local dish and can be found almost everywhere. If you try only one local thing, start here.

- Hedhikaa – the local afternoon snacks.
They include: bajiyaa – small triangular pastry bites, similar to samosa; kulhi boakibaa – a spicy fish pie/cake; mas roshi – flatbread or bread stuffed with tuna and coconut.

- For those who are bolder with taste, I would recommend rihaakuru
A thick concentrated fish product with a very strong flavor. This is already more “local” and not for everyone, but if you want an authentic experience, it is worth it. It is usually served at breakfast. I spread it on roshi; it is quite intensely salty and sticky.

- My favorite is Valhomas – smoked tuna in combination with noodles, rice, or curry.

- If you are at a resort and alcohol is allowed, try the local variations of classic cocktails. I really liked the Mojito with curry leaves – it has a different, very interesting aroma. Espresso Martini with Tonka syrup, a sweet syrup made from tonka bean, is also very interesting and has a more exotic aroma. The good thing is that all inclusive packages usually include these local variations for free.
- Wine is imported to the islands, from both the Old and New World, but be prepared for it to be quite sulfited. If you have an all inclusive package, they will offer it generously by the glass during lunch and dinner.
Overall, I really liked everything I tried from typical Maldivian cuisine. Resorts usually offer not only that, but also a wide variety – from local food to more East Asian cuisine, Oriental cuisine, but also pizza and pasta.
I wish everyone who loves to travel the opportunity to visit the Maldives at least once. The experience is worth every euro spent and every moment.
More important questions before a holiday in the Maldives
Are the Maldives suitable for a first long-distance trip?
Yes, especially if you choose a resort island with organized transfers, an all-inclusive package and a good house reef. This way, a large part of the logistics is taken care of for you.
Do I need to bring a power adapter?
Resorts often have sockets for different standards, but for a local island it is better to check in advance. At Oaga Art Resort we did not need an adapter.
Is an all-inclusive package in the Maldives worth it?
In many cases, yes, because food, drinks and cocktails on resort islands can be expensive. If you like to try local cuisine and drinks, an all-inclusive package can make your holiday more relaxing.
Can you go barefoot everywhere?
In many resorts, yes. On islands with soft sand, you hardly need shoes, but water shoes are useful when there are corals, rocks or sea cucumbers.
