Go and See Komat restaurant next to the Women’s Market in Sofia, Bulgaria

If you’re from Sofia, you probably wouldn’t think to seek out a sophisticated fine dining establishment near the Women’s Market.

However, that has changed. Since the DOT building was constructed, there is now a place offering fine cuisine and a pleasant atmosphere in that area- Komat restaurant. I encourage all Sofia food enthusiasts who haven’t heard of it yet to read on and discover what makes this special spot a magnet for customers.

See in Komat …

Art is everywhere: the building itself is an incredible work of art. Here are the highlights that impressed me the most:

… The façade, covered with rust, presumably controlled and sealed, is impossible to miss. It’s a brilliant solution by the architects from I/O to integrate such a luxurious building into the neighborhood.

When you look through the window, you see a wheelbarrow filled with white sand and drawings on it, delivering a message criticizing the constant intensive construction works on the Bulgaria’s coastline.

Look up, and you’ll see a lamp representing a glowing noose. It makes you think and wonder why a noose was chosen. Ponder a bit more, and you’ll likely find five different explanations. It’s a bold statement by the architects.

… The restaurant features numerous paintings, each with a message, all intriguing. I feel a bit uncomfortable when I stand to look at them since there are usually customers at the tables beneath them. Nonetheless, I can’t help but focus on these paintings every time I visit.

… The art doesn’t stop there- there’s a gallery on the upper floor. The charming lady explaining the artists and the paintings is Desi Sariyeva. She’s eloquent and will provide a detailed and engaging account of the art on display, making for an interesting conversation.

… Small sketches in the restroom, on the walls, and around various details in the interior are by Nedko Solakov. This playful touch is so appealing that I always notice and smile at them each time I visit.

… The mop adorned with necklaces and jewelry is placed between the first and second floors. The building offers accommodations, and this installation is in that section, not in the restaurant.

… The rooftop offers a 360-degree panoramic view. From what I understand, the space is part of the apartment on the top floor and might be available for events, as well as the gallery, but I’m not certain. It’s worth asking about.

Smell in Komat

… Wonderful aromas in the cocktails and the notes of fine wine from bottles served by the glass.

Taste  in Komat

… We attended the themed Black Sea dinner, and the food was exceptional and very impressive.

… However, during a subsequent standard dinner, I didn’t enjoy the beef tongue. It was left with its natural aroma, which isn’t my preference, and it was presented in a way that reminded me of its original form in the animal’s mouth, which I didn’t find appealing.

… I liked the salads and the bread served at the beginning with butter or spreads.

… The brunch offered on weekends is very tasty: variations of eggs prepared in different styles come with unique accompaniments, and the Bulgarian style donuts are my absolute favorite.

… The Pavlova is superb: as my favorite dessert, I try it everywhere it’s available, and here it did not disappoint in the least.

I recommend visiting Komat, even if just for a cocktail- the place is very impressive. If possible, explore the gallery.
