Хотел Селфос/ Hotel Selfoss

Selfoss Hotel, in Selfoss Town, Iceland

Selfoss is the largest hotel in the town of Selfoss. Its location is very convenient for accommodation as it is close to the so-called Golden Circle, which includes Iceland’s most important landmarks. Tourist routes often start here, and it is also it is a short drive from the capital, Reykjavik.

In our case, we wanted to continue along Iceland’s main road, so we chose to stay overnight along our journey.

The hotel is located on the Ölfusá River, the most voluminous in Iceland. The view of the river is stunning, especially at sunset.

Experience accents as per the 5D Sensograph:

See a simple interior, yet still pleasant. It looks better than in the photos.

Feel clean, comfortable, spacious rooms, mineral water from the tap.

Hear peaceful surroundings, global hits playing at breakfast.

Smell the morning aroma of complimentary coffee.

Taste varied breakfast, questionable quality of the vegetables.

See in Selfoss Hotel …

… … Simple interior, but pleasant.

… The double room is spacious and comfortable: of course, it’s nicer to have a view of the river, which costs between 25 and EUR 50 .

… The view from the restaurant during breakfast, overlooking the river.

Feel  in Selfoss Hotel

… The parking for hotel guests is free: it also serves as a public parking lot, so the signs for downloading the Parka app don’t apply to you if you’re staying there.

… The hotel has a SPA, but there is an additional charge of EUR 15 per person: the fact that the SPA area is not free is, of course, an issue, as we’re not used to that in Bulgaria. Otherwise, two double rooms cost around EUR 450 per night.

… The service at reception is ok but not particularly warm.

… We had an incident where we forgot our portable speaker: after writing to them, they first told me they hadn’t found it, but soon after claimed they found it in front of the hotel. It’s absurd that we would have left it there because we knew exactly where we had forgotten it. It was strange, and naturally, various suspicious thoughts crossed our minds. The important thing is that someone honourably handed it over to reception after we searched for it.

… The complimentary items in the room are unremarkable: instant coffee and tea.

… Wonderful walking opportunities nearby: the cemetery, often visited by cyclists and pedestrians, is close by, offering a beautiful view of the river and benches where you can sit and enjoy it. The hotel is also located next to a bike path that follows the river. If you take a walk along it, you’ll not only admire the stunning nature but also see the houses of Selfoss residents. You might even run into some of them working in their gardens at 10 p.m. under the still-bright sun; they’ll greet you and smile. The cats are also friendly—each wears a collar with identification and boldly comes up for a pet.

Hear in Selfoss Hotel

… Quiet at night: with the help of blackout curtains, you sleep very well despite the midnight sun.

Movie-watching time: 3:05 min.

Smell in Selfoss Hotel

… Pleasant-smelling products: no remarks, everything is fresh.

… A very nice detail, the hot tap water is mineral and smells like sulfur: some might describe it as rotten eggs. You can fill your bottle for the next day’s journey from it if the smell doesn’t bother you.

Taste  in Selfoss Hotel

… Abundant breakfast: I happily chose skyr with granola. After all, Iceland is the land of skyr, and its taste and texture are incomparable to the versions in our supermarkets. Otherwise, the vegetables had no taste, unlike the fruits, which were very sweet. They included watermelon, melon, bananas, and other imported options. I also recommend the bread. It’s always very good, almost always sourdough. The other items didn’t impress me, and the scrambled eggs tasted a bit like cardboard. Stick with the boiled eggs.

Near the hotel, a 5-minute walk away, is the shopping center with renovated historical buildings in Selfoss, where you can find a variety of street food, as well as the Skyr Museum. There, you can learn more about this local product and try its different versions. Unfortunately, we didn’t find it open.

Skyr is a dairy product, very rich in protein and lower in fat. It originates from Iceland.

It is tasty and a nice option to eat at this center; if the wine bar is open and you’re in the mood to spend some money, you can give it a try.

I recommend Hotel Selfoss, although it doesn’t look as appealing in pictures, but if you want, you can also look for rental houses nearby, in the opposite direction of the town, along the river. I was quite impressed by them, and I imagine it would be even more pleasant to stay there with their charming little yards and verandas.
