Avli is pronounced a stress on I, meaning courtyard. Such traditionally have all the old houses in Crete. Avli has been housed in a building since 1600. Completely renovated, but with maximum preservation of antiquity and atmosphere, embraces you with its casual comfort and swings you in its arms, sings you an old Cretan song, about changing kingdoms and languages, azure sea, generous sun, enchants you and does not let you go. It’s good that WizzAir sends you an e-mail from time to time to bring you back to reality and remind you of the poor organization of their flight schedule, delays and all sorts of attempts to confuse your well-planned vacation.

Friendly advice: if you are flying law cost, at least make sure your car rental is legible, because low cost rent-a-car companies refuse to wait for you in case of a flight delay, outside their working hours, regardless of whether you are ready to pay your afterhours fee.

Because you can’t get to Crete by plane except Wizz or Ryanair, and because it’s important to have a car to travel around the island, it’s a good idea to bet on good company.

Use the box below, which allows you to view all the options of all companies. If you still can’t afford one of the more famous ones, I recommend Global Rent-a-car or Holiday Auto from the locals. These two waited for their customers after the spectacular delay of Wizz’s flight by more than 6 hours and gave their cars at 4 am. Centauro did not want to wait for us even for their regular fee of 40 euros afterhours tax.

…. Beautiful old building, very dignified, with atmosphere and artistry. From the front wooden door, you can see how its handles are decorated – with colorful marbles. See in the video below;

…. The street on which the hotel is located is no less remarkable. Narrow, on both sides there are many artisan shops that dilute the heat of it with a pleasant coolness from their air conditioners. It is shady almost all day because the buildings are located very close, only in some rare moments it is sunny. The surrounding streets are shaded with natural vegetation and are very pleasant. …. Huge rooms, apartments, which can comfortably accommodate a family of 4. The bathroom is made of marble, the bathtub is a jacuzzi;

…. The courtyard where the breakfast takes place, i.e. this is the Avli restaurant itself, which is one of the few fine dining restaurants in Rethymno, is very beautiful, with artistic applications and motifs. Even though you are a guest of the hotel, in order to dine in it, you have to reserve a table from the day before;

…. It is possible in the morning on the narrow streets of the old town to see two people on scooters riding next to each other and talking, despite the loud flickering of their vehicles.

Avli gives you a feeling of complete comfort – you don’t miss anything!

…. Great service – the young people from the reception Stelios and Nikos are very responsive. They also take care of reservations, but not only, rather for the overall comfort of customers. Every morning they go through all the breakfast tables to ask if everything is okay, if there is a need for something. They advise where the best beaches are, they reserve seats in the restaurant. For the latter separately read below;

…. A pleasant shade under the lime tree in the courtyard of the restaurant, under which we ate slowly and casually a traditional Cretan breakfast;

…. The hotel uses the parking lot of Hotel Fortezza and has a discount for its guests, but still prepare 10 euros a day for it. If you see cars lining up in two rows on Friday night and clogging each other up, you just have to leave the key to the boys so they can move your car if necessary. This only lasts for the evening, when many people from the surrounding area come to enjoy the unique atmosphere of Rethymno and the delicious food in the taverns;

…. The towels in the bathroom are the biggest I’ve ever received in a hotel and are super soft. Again, I am referring to the feeling of complete comfort, so that you don’t miss anything;

…. There is WiFi, it is possible to interrupt, but I personally had 1-2 meetings online without a problem;

…. 2 one-liter bottles of complimentary water for the guests are left in the room every day. In the beginning there is also a complimentary espresso, tea and a small bottle of tsikudia.!

…. Very nice music at breakfast, accompanied by crescendo of cicadas In the evening, too- a little jazz, a little contemporary, but very good quality, I heard my favorite Michael Kiwanuka;

…. The ringing of the bells of the surrounding churches, and on Sundays the singing of the priest is heard outside the church.

…. Gorgeous aroma of natural honey and homemade raspberry jam, which they give for breakfast with the traditional for the island bread and pasta.

Taste ….

…. Breakfast is exceptional – of high quality local products, shows the traditions of Cretan cuisine. You have the opportunity to choose the protein in it – the eggs in whatever shape you like best. All variants are rather typical for the cuisine of the island – some scrambled eggs are with smoked pork fillet Apaki, others are with spinach, or with cheese typical of the region, even the fried eggs are cooked in their traditional goat butter staka;

… Speaking of goat butter, Anthogalo is straightforward culinary poetry – soft, ethereal, with a slight hint of sour cream, a unique thing! You have the pleasure to spread on the fresh bread every morning at the breakfast;

… The small bruschettas, again traditional for the area, called Dakos, with the finely chopped, flavored tomatoes and something like ricotta, again made of goat cheese, became a favorite of the children immediately;

… Fried dough pies, joy for the Bulgarians, since it is a typical breakfast also for us, you spread on them homemade honey or homemade raspberry jam;

…. Pieces of hard-aged cheese – also not to be missed, measure strength with parmigiano quite decently;

…. It is also worth visiting the restaurant for dinner. There are tasting menus, but you can combine as you see fit. I recommend trying different things traditional for the island, such as goat meat. It cooks great, super tender, nicely fragrant;

…. Be sure to combine with local wine. There are several remarkable varieties. Here we found a very different wine, rose Grifos, aged in amphorae for 5 years, with mineral aroma, hints of sulfur, milkiness and at the same time jam sweetness. You will see it in the movie;

…. Be sure to try the chocolate dessert, which has different textures – essential mousse, crispy cocoa biscuit with seeds, the interesting thing is that when hey serve it, they sprinkle it with olive oil to open the aromas even more.
