Heima

Heima Holiday Homes, close to Selfoss, Iceland

Heima Holiday Homes complex is about 20 km from the town of Selfoss and consists of several identical houses located next to each other. The communication with the hosts is entirely online; access codes are sent in advance, but you have the option to stop by the hosts’ house, which is a bit off to the side, and meet them. They are always there, and this is where the reception is located.

Here, for EUR 400 per night, you get a comfortable studio with a pull-out sofa, an individual bathroom with a toilet, and a kitchenette. Unlike other places, there’s an oven here, so if you buy meat or a ready-made pizza, you can cook it. Salt and black pepper were even provided.

There are no restaurants nearby, so it’s most convenient to shop in Selfoss and cook in the well-equipped studio at Heima. The place is ideal for an overnight stay after touring the Golden Circle.

You can learn more about the Golden Circle and other Icelandic landmarks from the post What can you do in Iceland? Part 4 of the Iceland Travelogue.

But you’ll learn more about Heima if you continue reading here.

Experience accents as per the 5D Sensograph:

See a simple interior, French windows that open to a view of the field, but there’s no rug.

Feel a pleasant surprise- the hosts’ dogs, which are super friendly.

Hear silence around you.

Smell a slightly strange, stale smell when you enter.

Taste filtered coffee, a compliment from the hosts.

See in Heima Holiday Homes …

… Simple interior, and there was no rug on the floor here either.

… A well-equipped kitchenette: here we had the best conditions for cooking. If you buy steaks, you can confidently grill them.

… A pleasant view of Iceland’s nature through the French windows.

Feel  in Heima Holiday Homes

… The dogs are very cute, they are three of them: they’re friendly, love to fetch a ball, bring it back to you, and encourage you to play with them. The hosts have a policy for their treatment, so be sure to read it. Don’t let them inside because they feel at home and want to climb on the bed, but their paws are muddy.

… Good kitchen equipment: besides the oven, there’s even a dishwasher, but no sponge for hand washing. There’s dish soap, but only a brush as an option. For example, I didn’t want to run the dishwasher at night because of the noise while we were sleeping, so I couldn’t wash the dishes needed for the morning. This caused a bit of inconvenience.

… The TV has Netflix: you can watch movies or your favorite series.

To enhance your experience while on the island, or even before, you can learn which Icelandic films to watch from the post What to eat and drink in Iceland – facts, advice, and tips & tricks you won’t find elsewhere – Part 5.

… The room’s complimentary items include filtered coffee, salt, and sugar.

Hear in Heima Holiday Homes

… Quiet at night: great blackout curtains on the windows plus the silence, it’s perfect for relaxation.

Movie-watching time: 1:13 min.

Smell in Heima Holiday Homes

… When we entered, I noticed a strange unpleasant smell: something between stale air and remnants of cooking from the previous day.

The lack of a kitchen absorber seems to be a common issue. There wasn’t one in Stracta either, and in the house in Reykjavik, we didn’t figure out how it worked. I suppose this leads to this defect.

… In the morning, the aroma of filtered coffee: if you like it and decide to make some. There’s no espresso, unlike at other places we stayed.

Taste  in Heima Holiday Homes

… You can practically cook anything: nothing is missing in the kitchen. Additionally, they’ve left you some spices. However, there’s no kitchen paper, only napkins for the table.

I would recommend Heima if you’re ready to stay in a studio with an extendable sofa with your family of four and if the dogs don’t bother you. Either way, if you’re not a fan of such animals, just ignore them, they won’t disturb you.
