Thea Thalassa- fish tavern on the edge of Afytos, Halkidiki, Greece
Last time visited in July 2015 with family
See… the simple but stylish decoration of the place; the view to the Aegean sea
Smell… the delicious sea food; the rich flavor of Assyrtiko wine from Santorini
Taste… very juicy grilled fresh fish
Feel and Experience… a nice friendly conversation with the owner about the wine the place offers
Hear… traditional Greek music
Afitos is a small village on the first leg of Halkidiki, Kassandra. It is famous with its cobled streets, old houses, jazz cafes and a line of fish restaurants situated along the coastal walk.
Before going to dinner, definitely you have to take a stroll in its center, peek into the artisan shops and buy some souvenirs. Do not forget before that to book a table on the pedestrian coastal street where some of the fish restaurants called xapotaverna in Greek, are situated. Their tables are placed directly on the street and also at the upper terraces.
The foremost in the line on the corner from the center is Thea Thalassa. The first thing you see are the fish tank and the fresh fish display. All kind of fish is available, as well as langoustines, lobster, shrimps, mussels, squids, octopus, everything. The price per kilo fresh fish is between 55-70 EUR which comes a little high but still into the normal limits for the area.
More important is that the grilled fish is very delicious and juicy.
I recommend to order a bottle of wine rather than by glass. The latter is not so good while the available wine in bottles is really worth it. We had Assyrtiko from Santorini region and we fell in love with its flavor and taste.
By tradition, at the end with the bill you will be served very sweet desserts and fruit as a complement.
For the comfort of family visitors, the restaurant has a small kids’ club where children can have some fun.
The view to the sea makes your dine really romantic and pleasing.
I would visit again Thea Thalassa when I come back to Afytos.
Address: The first one in the line from on the corner of the pedestrian walk by the sea.
