As wine lovers, we couldn’t help but visit Winery, in Greek- Ktima Gerovassiliou. It is pronounced Yerovasiliu.

It was founded by Vangelis Gerovassiliou, who years ago revived the Malagusia variety (emphasis on the last syllable) while working as wine maker at Domaine Porto Karas. In 1986 he started producing wine in the family winery. Subsequently, he became a co-founder of the famous Biblia Chora, which is located in the Kavala region. He is also involved in wineries in the Peloponnese, the island of Therasia and South Africa.

Ktima Gerovassiliou grows and produces wine from mainly local varieties, Malagusia, Asirtiko, but also Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Chardonay. From the reds – Limnio, Mavroudi, Mavrotragano, Xinomavro, Syrah.

… What impresses the most are not the vineyards around the winery, but the installations of modern artists between the rows of vines, in the courtyard, in the buildings of the winery – they are very intriguing. You can see the movie;

… One of the richest museums of corkscrews in the world, the oldest dating back to the 18th century. The collection numbers about 2,600 exhibits;

… Large stainless steel vessels and new French oak barrels. The latter are used max. 3 years.

… It is very hot in the summer outside, but inside the winery, museum and restaurant it is very pleasantly cool;

… You can choose ready-made combinations for tasting, which include an amuse bouche, but you can also choose other wines in tasting quantities or by the glass, as well as choose more appetizers from the menu;

For a tasting of 5 wines with pairing with food, which includes appetizers, main and dessert, a reservation is made in advance, as well as for a visit of a group of more than 10 people. The reservation can be made by phone, email or on the website.

… Good presentation of the winery, very interesting tour in their wine museum. All installation authors are introduced, as well as the names of their works.

… A distinct and very impressive peach aroma of the Museum Collection White wine, which includes Malagousia, Assyrtiko, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Viognier;

… We really liked the smell of the red Evangelo, which is made from Syrah and Viognier.

Taste Gerovassiliou winery…

The food at Gerovassiliou’s restaurant is wonderful!

… Bruschettas are basically large sandwiches with sourdough bread and very good cheese, tarama or whatever else they have included as an option on the menu;

… I recommend the cheese platter – very nice, local, I was ready to buy from them immediately to take home if they offered;

… If you want to try a red wine, entirely from Greek varieties, I recommend Avaton- Limnio, Mavroudi and Mavrotragano.

If you are in Thessaloniki, only 25 km away is Ktima Gerovassiliou, I recommend you to jump there.
